aNewDomain.net — According to a recent European Union memo, mobile Internet traffic will be 30 times busier in 2020 than it was in 2010. Furthermore, this uptick in traffic will reflect the massive growth in machines and sensors that use the Internet to communicate (otherwise known as the Internet of Things).
The memo also predicts that 5G won’t just be faster, it will promote functionalities and applications with high social and economic value. A few examples include:
- eHealth
- Connected homes
- Secure transport
- Smart grids
- Entertainment
The memo concludes with several helpful links highlighting various 5G research projects, including the homepage for the Digital Agenda for Europe, and a Mobile World Congress (MWC) speech by Neelie Kroes, VP of the European commission responsible for the Digital Agenda.
