aNewDomain — It’s day one of the mother of all film festivals. I’m here in Cannes all week for you. My update for Cannes Film Festival 2015 day one is below, followed by my video coverage.
Highlighting women filmmakers, Cannes 2015 kicks off with a buzz surrounding films by Maiwenn (see “Mon Roi” starring Emmanuelle Bercot and Vincent Cassel) and Natalie Portman. Portman’s directorial feature debut “A Tale of Love and Darkness” is being shown in the Special Screenings section.
Valerie Donzelli’s “Marguerite and Julien” and Stephane Brize’s “A Simple Man” are both in the running for the coveted Palme d’Or.
Emmanuelle Bercot’s French social drama “Standing Tall,” featuring Catherine Deneuve, opens the ecstatic atmosphere to 18 competition films that include works by Denis Villeneuve, Todd Haynes, Justin Kurzel, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Matteo Garrone, Jacques Audiard, and Yougos Lanthimos.
As is de rigueur for the festival on the Riviera, sex and lust are recurring themes this year. Gaspar Noe’s 3D film “Love” sports one of the raciest posters in recent memory with its depiction of a saliva-dripping three-way kiss between two women and a man.
Paolo Sorrentino’s film “Youth” stars Michael Caine as a retired orchestra conductor on vacation in an Alpine resort where people try to regain or flaunt their youth.
The annual longing for Cannes is once again consummated. Let the screenings and festivities begin.
