aNewDomain — Getting fit is one of those things in life we could all use some help with. And being a bunch of techies, using your smartphone is probably the best way to jump-start that new routine. I’m a big fan of You Are Your Own Gym (YAYOG) for Android because it’s basically a gym in your pocket. Yes, it has a $2.99 price tag, but that’s a lot cheaper than an actual gym membership.
YAYOG (yay!)
This app provides a number of workouts that feature body and weight workouts that can be conducted without any equipment. You might need a bench or chair, but don’t worry about lugging around dumbbells. I prefer to work out wherever, without notice, and this has a ton of excellent exercises for that mentality.
Here’s a quick heart-rate increaser: do 20 jumping jacks real quick, 15 push-ups and 10 sit-ups/crunches three times in a row. Your heart rate will rise, and your core will start to feel nice and warm. You can always add more to this routine, like jump squats or burpees, and I’m positive you will see an increase in strength and mobility. You can also turn it into a Tabata-like routine, if you want.
YAYOG hosts 8-11 week training programs that are ready for you to join, which is the reason for the small price. You can, of course, create a program of your own. You can focus your workout to hit all three aspects of full exercise, using cardio, upper body and lower body in a week. Or you can focus on a single part of the body or method of workout, and you can even change between weeks if you get tired of one thing.
Lastly, there’s a handy timer and stopwatch feature that’s built into the app. I usually set up intervals or get that Tabata workout going. If you’ve been wanting to shape up and need the extra encouragement, You Are Your Own Gym is a great, relatively cheap way to start.
You Are Your Own Gym is available for Android on Google Play or Apple iOS for $2.99.
