Apple iPad 3 HD Near Retina Display (infographic)

This infographic will help you realize what the new third gen Apple iPad 3 — or HD — really offers with it super hi-def, near retina display. Thanks to Buzzkill.com, a great site that created this graphic.

Wrapping your head around the idea of the near retina display on the upcoming Apple iPad 3 — or iPad HD — isn’t that easy. The folks from Buzzfeed came up with a great infographic to help you visualize, pun intended, its new ultra high-def pixel density.

The Apple iPad 2 has a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 XGA screen — that’s about 130 to 131 pixels per inch (PPI). The new model will sport 264 PPI, we see. We’ve reported that the new display is destined for all future Apple systems and devices — that resolution is sharp enough to give you the impression that there aren’t dots at all. is pixelated at that resolution. If you’ve got an Apple iPhone 4S, you get the idea.

By the way, the new Apple iPad display is not truly a retinal display. It’s a high-def display. And three unrelated sources tell us to expect it on all upcoming Apple notebooks and systems, including the Apple TV purportedly announced tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Writes Buzzfeed:

So I ran the numbers. The current iPad, for example, has a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 screen, which works out to a pixel density of about 131 PPI. In order to match the new iPad’s total number of pixels, the iPad 2 would need a 19-inch screen at its current pixel density. In other words: it would be huge.

How huge? Check out the Buzzfeed infographic, below.
