Star Wars Day 2012: Origin of the AT-AT Walkers?

Our Julie Blaustein snapped this shot of the Port of Oakland. Notice the cranes at right. Do they resemble the AT-AT Walkers in Star Wars? Here’s what George Lucas says about whether they inspired them.

I took a photo of the Port of Oakland. Notice the cranes at far right. The cranes move shipping containers as cranes do, but what’s super cool about them is how eerily similar they are to AT-AT Walkers, the four-legged monstrosities¬†in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”¬†When asked point blank by San Francisco Chronicle writer Peter Hartlaub about whether these cranes inspired the Walkers Star Wars creator George Lucas denied it.

Sure. And maybe the ruthless banker San Hill in Star Wars has no basis in the Sand Hill Road venture capital center of Silicon Valley? Take a look …

Happy Star Wars Day 2012. May the Fourth Be With You …
