Maker Faire 2013: Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci Fi Geek Gallery

Geeks love science fiction. They fill up events like Maker Faire 2013. So it’s only natural that Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr. Who and HAL 9000 exhibits were in abundance. Check out this photo gallery. Photo essay: Richard Hay

aNewDomain.net — I know this comes as a shocking revelation. I was struck by the science fiction references all over Maker Faire 2013 at the San Mateo Event Center here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Here’s Star Trek, as represented by the Starship Enterprise, boldly going to Maker Faire 2013.

Star Wars fans could check out the R2D2 area with references to astromech.net, the official website of the R2D2 builders club. I heard a number of the exciting squeaks and squeals of everyone’s favorite droid while standing next to the assembled replicas.

And then below we see a Lego Yoda:

Yoda was definitely a meme at the show. A template to print his head is floating around and more than one 3D printer vendor did just that. Here’s one result.

You can’t have a sci fi theme without a reference to good ole Hal, from “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

Even Dr. Who and the enemy Daleks were there. In force.

And though they do not represent an iconic film — unless you count “Gnomeo & Juliet” — I was a sucker for the Combat Garden Gnomes.
