Geonaute 360: Capture Everything, All Around (specs, video)

Written by Gina Smith

Our Kerry Kinsey dives into the Geonaute 360, the first ever 360 degree video and photo camera that doesn’t require post production stitching. Specs, video.

aNewDomain.net — Last year at CES 2013, Geonaute showed its very first 360 camera prototypes. This year, execs returned to the ShowStoppers press event at CES 2014 to show off the final and soon-to-ship version of the Geonaute 360 camera. And execs demonstrated a complete range of services for the video camera, too. Here are details, specs and a video demonstration from our Kerry Kinsey.

As a video guy, it’s hard to not be blown away by the Geonaute 360. This camera is equipped with three wide-angle optic lenses, each with its own eight megapixel CMOS sensor. The effect is that you get almost a complete, circular view. The video and panoramic photos you capture go 360° horizontal and 150° vertical. And the Geonaute 360, execs claimed, is the first ever 360 video camera that doesn’t require post processing to stitch images together.

That means you’re able to pull videos and panoramic photos right off the Geonaute 360 — and you’re able to feed them into pretty much any photo or video viewer, too.

Geonaute execs announced a wide array of software and services for the Geonaute 360 at CES 2014. These include Geonaute Studio, which lets you organize and sync up your 360° videos and panoramic photos and play them back. Also announced was the highly-intriguing PlayGeonaute platform. It is, execs said, the first public 360° photo and video sharing web network.

And of course there are apps. PlayGeonaute for Androïd and Apple iOS are free apps that aim to bring your Geonaute 360 creations to your smartphone or tablet. There’s an open API, too, so other vendors are able to take advantage of the platform. The upcoming Oculus VR product is one example of what happens when VR and 360 video blend. When will the Geonaute ship? Well, execs were taking pre-orders at CES 2014. We fully expect the first Geonaute 360° action cameras to arrive this spring.
