CES 2013 Sony Cuts Off Playstation 2, Turns Up Bob Dylan Outtakes Collection Vol 1

CES 2013 Sony news from Monday, Jan 7, 2013 — Sony will cease manufacturing of the Sony Playstation 2 *(finally!) and suprised with an online release of 86 rare Bob Dylan tracks via bobdylan.com — but you only get them if you log in from France or England. One hundred copies of the collection — aptly called Bob Dylan: The 50th Anniversary Collection: The Copyright Extension Collection Vol I — are available for a pretty penny on eBay. Plus lots of pirated copies. Why the release? Europe’s new use it or lose it copyright law, which comes into effect 2014. Expect a lot more Bob Dylan this year. Happy New Year, Bob. Details inside.

ces2013bobdylansonyreleasealbumpic aNewDomain.net — CES 2013 Sony confirmed it is giving up on its Playstation 2. It will cease manufacturing worldwide, execs said. At about the same time, news broke of Sony plans to unleash 86 plus Bob Dylan tracks recorded in 1962, giving them a new lease on economic life due to a “use it or lose it” change in European copyright law affecting pre 1963 recordings that will go into effect in 2014.

“This isn’t a scheme to make money,” a Sony Music source told The Rolling Stone before the announcement. “The copyright law in Europe was recently extended from 50 to 70 years for everything recorded in 1963 and beyond. With everything before that, there’s a new ‘Use It or Lose It’ provision. It basically said, ‘If you haven’t used the recordings in the first 50 years, you aren’t going to get any more.'”

The New York Times has a detailed piece on why and how the legal change forced the release of the songs, outtakes and other rare, oft bootlegged tracks — and a list of songs that would make any hardcore Dylan fan slobber.

Americans are out of luck at the moment, though there are discs available on eBay — presumably from the just 100 CD sets it made available last week. Bidding is going wild. Clearly, this is not your dad’s — or grandpa’s Bob Dylan. Keep an eye out for our Bob Dylan 101 spectacular in case you’re clueless of any of J. Dylan’s ascendants. LOL. It happens.

Music sharing sites and pirate sites will probably be posting these momentarily.
